The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSF), a non-profit organisation, plays a leading role in the fight against preventable heart disease and stroke, with the aim of seeing fewer South Africans suffer premature deaths and disabilities. Their mission is to encourage prevention at all levels, empower South Africans to adopt healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices easier. The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) is a member organisation that acts as the representative body of the entire consumer goods industry. Established in 2002, they have more than 12 000 member companies, large and small, across the consumer goods value chain – including the retail, wholesale and manufacturing sectors. The CGCSA facilitates engagement between stakeholders in the industry, and they represent the interests of the industry to the government and other relevant parties. The Consumer Education Project of Milk SA is an initiative by Milk South Africa, which was formed in 2007 to communicate the health and nutritional benefits of milk and other dairy products to consumers and health professionals in South Africa. The project communicates knowledge from different disciplines to the target audience through television, digital media, print and radio. A combination of sound scientific information and good understanding of consumer behaviour anchors the project. Three servings a day is advised as this makes a meaningful contribution to the diet by providing good quality protein, a variety of essential vitamins as well as calcium and other minerals.
